Let’s Nail it Together: Deck Maintenance Made Easy (and Fun!)
If you’ve been thinking about oiling or staining your deck, now is the perfect time to give it the attention it deserves. And to make the process simple, the Dynamic Decks and Patios team have put together a straightforward step-by-step guide. Follow along, and you will have a deck that not only looks fantastic, but is ready to withstand whatever the seasons throw at it.
Step 1: Clear the Deck (Literally)
Before you get started, clear the deck of BBQs, furniture, plants—basically, anything that is not nailed down. Once that is done, grab a broom and give the deck a good sweep. The last thing you want is organic debris sitting around for too long because as it breaks down it can turn acidic and do a number on your decking boards.
Step 2: Time for a Clean-Up
Now for the fun part—cleaning! You’ve got a choice: old-school elbow grease with a bristle brush, or cranking up the pressure washer. If you are feeling nostalgic for some classic DIY action, grab that brush and work out those muscles. It’s gentler on the timber, and let’s face it—there’s something satisfying about doing it the old-fashioned way.
BUT, if you are in a rush, or you just want to feel like a superhero, a pressure washer will do the trick. Remember though, power washers can be a little too powerful sometimes, so dial it down to avoid damaging your deck. And don’t forget to clean the balustrades and any steps attached to your deck while you are at it.
Bunnings offers a solid range of environmentally-friendly deck cleaners. Since the runoff may end up in your garden, we recommend opting for something non-toxic. You can also use a gentle cleaner you probably already have at home (AKA dishwashing detergent can work a treat!). And once you’re done, a quick rinse with the garden hose should remove all the soap and debris.
Step 3: Let It Dry, Baby
Before you start reassembling your outdoor haven, let your deck dry completely. If you are thinking about oiling or staining, make sure the boards are bone-dry first, or you will risk trapping moisture, which could lead to mould or warping down the track.
Step 4: Oiling vs. Staining, The Big Debate
Here’s where it gets fun!
Oiling will enhance the natural colour of your timber and give it a healthy, rich sheen. Plus, it protects your deck from Brisbane’s harsh UV rays that can cause cracking and shrinking over time. There are water-based and oil-based options, so you will need to choose based on the look you are going for. Water-based oils are more durable, sit on top of the wood, and have minimal impact on the timber's colour. Oil-based options penetrate the wood for extra protection against water damage but tend to darken the wood a little. Your call!
Staining: If you are looking to completely transform the look of your deck, staining is the way to go. Stains not only change the colour, but also increase the timber's resistance to UV damage. The right stain can give your deck a whole new vibe.
Whatever route you take, make sure you follow the instructions on the product packaging. Trust us, your deck will thank you later.
Step 5: Enjoy Your Work!
Now that you have done all the hard work, it is time to put your furniture and BBQ back in place—and maybe pour yourself a well-deserved drink to celebrate! Not only should your deck look incredible, but you will have done wonders for its longevity.
So, whether you are a seasoned DIYer or just looking to tackle something new this year, a little attention to your deck can go a long way. Plus, it's the perfect excuse to spend some time outdoors enjoying the beautiful Brisbane weather!
All the best.
